A well preserved fortress dating back to the eleventh century depicting brilliant architecture best describes the Jaisalmer Fort . Situated 7.1 km from Bada Bagh, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the top monuments of Rajasthan. Like many hill forts this structure too stands on the Trikuta Hill amidst the scorching heat of the Thar Desert.

The lovely tint of yellow reflects the sunshine and glows like gold. This has earned the monument another prestigious name – the Sonar Qila or Golden Fort. Interesting History Of Jaisalmer Fort

This Gold Fort was a route for several merchants and travelers as it was a piece of Silk Route. Founded by Rawal Jaisal way back in the year 1126 AD, there is an interesting meaning to this wonderful name.

While the first part of the fort’s name ‘Jaisal’ is derived from the founder’s name, the second part is derived from the world ‘Meru’. The Himalayan God’s eternal mystique mountain’s name is called -‘Meru’.

Jaisalmer Fort’s Amazing Architecture

The world’s largest ‘alive’ / ‘living’ (best preserved) monument reflects the architectural brilliants of the Rajput times. Surrounded by the Thar desert, the sources of water came from the constructed wells. This Fort is 250 ft tall and is made up of three layers. The middle layer is made of loose rubble in between two layers of solid sandstone. Raja’sthan’s second monument with 99 bastions has stood through centuries and several battles.

Best Time To Visit: the Jaisalmer Fort is situated in a Thar Desert and is scorching hot. So it is best to avoid summer visits. So visit during winter months like October to February.

By Air

The nearest airport is Jodhpur situated 300 km from the city which takes around 5 hours to reach. (Presently the Jaisalmer airport is rarely used with chartered flights).

By Rail

Several famous trains connect Jaisalmer to major cities. This includes Lalgarh Jaisalmer Special, Howrah Jaisalmer Express, Delhi Jaisalmer Express, & Jodhpur Jaisalmer Express.
